Learning Platform Design

Project Scope

LearnHub was designed to address the growing need for accessible, engaging online education that rivals in-person learning experiences. The challenge was creating a platform that worked equally well for diverse user groups: students of varying ages and technical abilities, instructors creating and managing courses, and administrators monitoring platform performance.

Discovery Phase

Our research phase included interviews with 30 educators and 50 students across different age groups and subjects, revealing desires for better engagement tools, clearer progress visualization, and more intuitive course navigation. We analyzed existing LMS platforms, identifying common usability issues like overwhelming interfaces, poor mobile experiences, and lack of motivational elements. Persona development helped us understand the distinct needs of high school students, college learners, professional development seekers, and instructors.

Information Architecture

We created a dual-interface design: a streamlined student view focused on learning with minimal distractions, and a comprehensive instructor dashboard with powerful course creation and analytics tools. Card sorting exercises with users helped us organize course content, resources, and navigation in ways that matched their mental models. The sitemap was designed to accommodate future feature expansion while maintaining simplicity.

Student Interface Design

For students, we designed an innovative progress tracking system using visual metaphors like learning paths and achievement badges that gamify the educational experience without trivializing it. The course player features note-taking synchronized with video timestamps, downloadable resources organized by module, and discussion forums threaded by topic. We implemented a clean, distraction-free video player with playback speed controls, quality settings, and keyboard shortcuts for efficient navigation.

Instructor Dashboard

For instructors, we created an intuitive course builder using drag-and-drop functionality for organizing content, built-in quiz and assignment creation tools, and detailed analytics showing student engagement, completion rates, and performance metrics. The live session feature integrates video conferencing with screen sharing, interactive whiteboards, and breakout rooms. We designed a comprehensive grading interface that streamlines assessment and provides tools for personalized feedback.
